Overview

As the keystone of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, the Senior Executive Service (SES) was established to "...ensure that the executive management of the United States is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the Nation and otherwise is of the highest quality."

SES Orientation Briefings are government-wide programs designed to orient new Federal Senior Executives to their enterprise-wide role and environment, provide practical advice on navigating unique challenges new SES members face, and explore the career SES role as the link between top Presidential appointees and the rest of the Federal workforce.

SES Orientation Briefings are part of OPM's enhanced executive onboarding model and government-wide executive onboarding framework, and OPM's Framework for the Continuing Development of Federal Senior Executives.

How You Will Benefit

In keeping with the role of the Senior Executive Service, the overall theme for the program is "Being Future Ready-Leading America's Workforce." The program features keynote speakers who are policymakers, current and former SES members, and subject matter experts. In addition to plenary discussions, speakers may engage participants in interactive exercises and small group discussions.

The program agenda and online pre-readings are emailed to participants prior to the SES Orientation Briefing. Participants are asked to respond to an online pre-program survey a few weeks prior to the program to inform the agenda.

The SES Orientation Briefing concludes with a Federal Judge administering the Oath of Office, an affirmation of our Constitutional heritage and responsibility. After the program adjourns, participants will receive their SES Certificates in the mail.

Who Should Attend

Career Senior Executive Service (SES), Senior Level (SL), and Scientific or Professional (ST), and other SES-equivalents. SES Orientation Briefings support Senior Executives in their first two years of appointment. Seasoned Senior Executives who have not previously attended are also welcome.
