SES Orientation Briefings are two-day programs offered twice each calendar year in conjunction with the White House Presidential Personnel Office for the benefit of all Federal agencies. The program is purposely designed to complement agency-level onboarding programs and to add a unique, enterprise leadership perspective to the onboarding discipline.
As the keystone of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, the Senior Executive Service (SES) was established to "...ensure that the executive management of the United States is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the Nation and otherwise is of the highest quality." Each SES Orientation Briefing is a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge to realize these aims, to expand professional networks, and to acclimate to the SES enterprise leadership role and environment.
Each Briefing orients new Federal Senior Executives to their enterprise-wide role and environment, provides practical advice on navigating unique challenges new SES members face, and explores the career SES role as the link between top Presidential appointees and the rest of the Federal workforce.
In keeping with the role of the Senior Executive Service, the overall theme for the program is "Being Future Ready: Leading America's Workforce." The program features keynote speakers who are policymakers, current and former members of the SES, and subject matter experts. In addition to plenary discussions, many speakers engage participants in interactive exercises and small group discussions.
The SES Orientation Briefing concludes with a Federal judge administering the Oath of Office, an affirmation of our Constitutional heritage and responsibility. Participants then receive their SES Certificates and have the opportunity for individual photographs with the Federal Judge.
SES Orientation Briefings are designed exclusively for career SES, Senior Level (SL), Scientific and Professional (ST), and other SES equivalents in their first or second year of appointment.
Approximately 200 career SES and SES equivalents from across the Federal government attend each SES Orientation Briefing. Many attendees report that the networking opportunity the program provides is alone invaluable to them.
The SES Briefing is limited to participants who are validated members of the career Senior Executive Service or SES equivalents. If questions contact SES-Orientation-Briefing@opm.gov.
The SES Orientation Briefing program agenda and online pre-readings are emailed to participants the week prior to the program. Participants are asked to respond to an online pre-program survey a few weeks prior to the program to inform the agenda.
SES Orientation Briefings are part of FEI’s SES Leading EDGE portfolio, a government-wide continuum of learning that strengthens the enterprise onboarding and continuing development of the Senior Executive through all phases of the SES life cycle, starting with entry into the SES. The onboarding and continuing development government-wide programs in the portfolio advance enterprise leadership capacity to deliver government excellence, promote cross-agency collaboration and innovation, produce stronger performance across government, deliver increased value to taxpayers, and elevate esprit de corps and ideals of Federal service.
SES Orientation Briefings are also part of OPM's enhanced executive onboarding model and government-wide executive onboarding framework, and OPM's Framework for the Continuing Development of Federal Senior Executives.
Tuition includes all educational services, materials, morning and afternoon break service and lunch.
